As expected, Disney's conclusion to their Star Wars sequel trilogy, and the entire Skywalker saga, came out on top at the box office. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker debuted with $175.5 million in its opening weekend, placing it below preceding films The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi (which opened to $248 million and $220 million respectively), but it's still the third biggest December opening of all time, and the third biggest opening of 2019. With the holiday season in full swing, the film is expected to help push new box office records for Disney, with few other tentpole films to compete against. While the film hasn't performed as well with critics compared to The Last Jedi, audience reception will ultimately decide how strong the film's legs are during the holidays.
Falling to second place was last weekend's top film, Jumanji: The Next Level, which brought in an additional $26.1 million over the three-day weekend. The added gross pushes the film's domestic haul to over $101 million over 10 days and with its target demographic off school, the film should hold strong given its positive critical reception, though it may ultimately fall short of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle's record total for Sony Pictures.
Dropping to third was Disney's animated sequel Frozen II, which continues to perform well at the box office. The film finished with a weekend haul of $12.3 million, putting it on pace to surpass Frozen's $400 million domestic haul, as well as its $1.2 billion worldwide take.
Debuting in fourth is Universal's new cinematic adaptation of the classic musical Cats. The film's box office performance was always going to be up in the air in spite of the all-star talent assembled for the film, thanks to its much maligned visual effects. Though whether the film would ultimately draw in curious audiences remained a point of interest heading into the weekend. The musical ultimately finished with a disappointing $6.5 million over the three-day weekend.
Rounding the top five was the Rian Johnson directed whodunit, Knives Out. The mystery thriller brought in $6.1 million in its fourth weekend of release, bringing up its 25-day domestic haul to $89.6 million, keeping it on pace to pass the $100 million threshold. ~Paolo Maquiraya

yes I agree it was not the best movie but neither were the last five movies other than empire strikes back and maybe stars wars last hope they were all terrible too bad you cant win them all the director was too wet behind the ears and inexperience to make a great movie
