Houston, 1997. As his family struggles to pay the bills, with his father holding down two jobs, honor student Darius Clark Monroe, 16, comes up with a crazy idea to help out. With two of his friends, he organizes and carries out an armed bank robbery that nets them the tidy sum of $140,000. He’s arrested and sentenced to five years in prison.

Upon his release, Darius enrolls in film school at the University of New York, where Spike Lee is one of his teachers. This time armed with a camera, he spends the next seven years making this documentary about the robbery he committed, to try to understand the reasons and consequences of his actions through interviews with his family members as well as the victims of his crime.
