This provocative tale delves into the plight of Fitria, a Javanese woman who rails against her highly conservative and superstitious environment. When we meet Fitria, she has been shackled to her bed, ostensibly for her own protection.
Her father, a well respected member of the local community, believes his daughter to be possessed by demons, and thinks that physical restraint will cure her. Following the death of her best friend, she is shaken out of her complacent world view and total obedience to the male figures in her life.
This self-awakening comes at a price however, with Fitria's rebellious behaviour placing her at odds with all who know her.
