Terminator: Dark Fate tops weekend box office

The long-awaited new installment in the Terminator series -- Terminator: Dark Fate -- took first place at the box office this weekend.

Starring Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger, Terminator: Dark Fate debuted in over 4,000 theaters, taking in a total of $29 million at the domestic box office. Compared to the first weekend of 2015's Terminator Genisys, the new sequel earned $2 million more.

Remaining in second place was Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix, which earned an additional $13.9 million for a domestic total of $299.6 million. It is now one of the highest-grossing films of 2019 and the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.

Dropping two spots to third place from last weekend was Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, starring Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning. It earned an additional $12.2 million during its third weekend for a total of $84.3 million.

Another new movie -- Harriet, starring Cynthia Erivo in the title role as the escaped slave who formed the Underground Railroad -- debuted in over 2,000 theaters, earning $12 million in its first weekend.

Rounding out the top five was the animated feature The Addams Family. It earned an additional $8.5 million for a four-week total of $85.3 million. ~ May Wong
