Young couple Rose (Odessa Young) and Fred (Logan Lerman) are invited to stay with writer Shirley Jackson (Elisabeth Moss) and her husband Stanley (Michael Stuhlbarg) after they arrive in town, where Fred will work alongside Stanley at the local college. Rose soon discovers Shirley, who is writing a new story, is more than a little strange, and somewhat frightening.
