In the official trailer for the documentary Obit we open on a writer grabbing his tool of choice – a pen – and then flash to a folder labeled “Making a Living Handling Death.” We are now behind the scenes with The New York Times obituary team as they search files, make calls and discuss their job as obituary writers. We then hear one of the obituary writers describe the irony of what they do having little to do with death, but more to do with life. Scenes of old files, newspaper clippings, old photos and videos reveal how the paper’s obituary team carries out its important “life’s” work.
