Finally an intelligent movie again!

User review rating: 5 October 31, 2010

The movie is difficult to stomach for many for obvious reasons - but definitely lives up to the potential of the secularist answer as to why it is important to ask questions and prod and doubt, rather than act and accept the truths of all formal religions and ideologies.

Great story

User review rating: 1 October 06, 2010

completely uninteresting

User review rating: 2 September 28, 2010

Didn't care for it

User review rating: 2 September 24, 2010

Not one I would recommend!

User review rating: 2 September 16, 2010

Disappointing to say the least. Weisz is good as always tho

User review rating: 2 September 16, 2010

very boring movie

User review rating: 5 September 08, 2010

One of my favorite films of all-time. Those suggesting that they were bored might do well to first get their high school diplomas before watching thought provoking films.

User review rating: 1 September 01, 2010

So boring we couldn't sit through the whole movie

User review rating: 3 August 26, 2010

enjoyed it!

User review rating: 4 August 24, 2010

Beautifull movie. Rachel Weisz is always perfect, expressing her passion for lerning above all. Makes you want to read more about religion and rationality.

User review rating: 3 August 23, 2010

This is definitely a History Buff's movie.

User review rating: 4 August 23, 2010

Interesting but lengthy.

User review rating: 4 August 15, 2010

interestign and entertaingin

User review rating: 3 August 14, 2010

not a bad movie... seems overly long though

User review rating: 4 August 13, 2010

This is a marvelous movie of ideas. It does not overwhelm the viewer with great potfulls of cgi effects a la Alexander or Troy. Rachel Weisz is perfectly cast as the woman Hyapatia, whose passion only resides in her quest for learning. It is doubtful that she is even aware that there are actually two sexes.Or,the fact that there are- is personally irrelevent to her. The film offers a good picture of the tradional,age-long bloody clash between the irrationality of religion versus the reasoned approach of science in its never-ending quest to make sense of the universe. I can't praise this film enough.

Good script and cast keep this one afloat. Surprised it was released when it was, more of an Oscar contender than a Summer movie. Sets and costumes are excellent, as is Rachel Weisz... again. Excellent entertainment, albeit a little sad.

not very great, foreign film.

User review rating: 4 July 29, 2010

Entertaining and visually stunning tale of Roman proportions. Rachel Weisz continues to impress with each and every role. Sets, costumes, script and cast make this film highly entertaining and a potential Oscar contender. Well worth checking out.

User review rating: 4 July 29, 2010

Definitely met my criteria, great movie!

User review rating: 3 July 28, 2010

Another nifty Rachel Weisz vehicle. This time she cuts her chops on a nifty Roman period piece. Rather morose tale, but supporting cast, sets and costumes keep this from getting dull.

User review rating: 3 July 28, 2010

Rachel Weisz was excetional. Period film complex. Not my favorite. Good if you like period movies or love Rachel Weisz.

User review rating: 2 July 27, 2010

It was ok, a bit gloomy!

User review rating: 4 July 26, 2010

A lovely historical drama in which science and logical thinking loses out to superstitions. I love the portrayal of the early days of Christianity and the Roman influence upon it's rise to power over other relgiouns.

User review rating: 4 July 26, 2010

Sets, script and stars, this film has it all. Not only that, awesome set pieces and truly dramatic themes set this one apart from the usual Summer fare.

User review rating: 4 July 24, 2010

Great acting in this

User review rating: 4 July 24, 2010

A fime period piece made better with the presence of Rachel Weisz. Rather gloomy tale with very few female roles, bur entertaining and beautiful to watch. Supporting cast is well selected and effective. Good movie.

User review rating: 3 July 23, 2010

A bit bleak, but excellent performances and wonderful set pieces keep this film alive. Rachel Weisz is one of the best female actors around, great work here. If you like period pieces your gonna love this movie!

User review rating: 3 July 22, 2010

Rachel Weisz makes this movie very entertaining. Sets, script and cast is wonderful. This film is rather gloomy, but those who love period pieces will not be disappointed.

User review rating: 3 July 22, 2010

Visually stunning work. However the story leaves a lot to be desired... ie. there hardly is one except for the meandering storyline with Christian martyrdom spattered everywhere. Acting by Rachel Weisz saves the day, but is it enough to make up for the rest? Almost but not quite. Skip it unless you have nothing else to watch.

User review rating: 4 July 21, 2010

A good movie made great by the wonderful acting of Rachel Weisz. Set pieces and supporting cast alsio shine in this summer drama. Something for everyone with a script that's very entertaining.

User review rating: 2 July 20, 2010

One of those sweeping epic films. No coherent plot. Could have been better better if there was some plot focus on Rachel Weis's character, Hypatia(sp?).

User review rating: 2 July 20, 2010

Good actress bad movie.

User review rating: 3 July 20, 2010

Good acting and decent script, Rachel Weisz has never been better. A lack of other females in this movie and a rather gloomy story makes this an odd Summer movie. Entertaining none the less.

User review rating: 2 July 17, 2010

Not great

User review rating: 3 July 16, 2010

I always enjoy Rachel, but this movie was rather dark and depressing. I prefer something more entertaining.

User review rating: 4 July 16, 2010

i liked it

User review rating: 3 July 16, 2010

it was just ok

User review rating: 3 July 14, 2010

This was a movie that was entertaining and worth the watch.

User review rating: 3 July 14, 2010

Alright. The historical inaccuracies and insistence to showcase "Christian Martyrdom" every chance they got was a bit much... but overall it was generally entertaining.

User review rating: 2 July 12, 2010

it was just ok

User review rating: 4 July 10, 2010

The actress is stunning and at her best.

User review rating: 3 July 08, 2010

Rachel Weisz is excellent in this period piece. Well written and acted, Agora is an entertaining and thought provoking film. Supporting cast is good as well, despite the general lack of women in this film.

User review rating: 3 July 08, 2010

A really interesting idea, and actually well written. It falls down a little in the execution, looking no better than the TV show Rome, which looked good "for a TVshow". However, still worth seeing.

User review rating: 4 July 08, 2010

IT was ok

User review rating: 4 July 07, 2010

never stopped laughing

User review rating: 3 July 06, 2010

Good plot, well made and actted, but only one woman in the whole film. Rachel Weisz is good, don't get me wrong, but even ancient Rome had more than one woman in it. C'mon!

User review rating: 3 July 05, 2010

Good movie but a bit slow on the action, a few times the movie seemed to be very drawn out.

User review rating: 3 July 04, 2010

Guy filled movie with one female in the lead role. Was ancient Rome that riddled with guys? Not enough women in this film.
