Marvel's record-breaking hit returns to theaters next week with the aim of surpassing Avatar as the all-time king of the box office.
It's only a couple of weeks away until Marvel releases their final Phase 3 film, Spider-Man: Far From Home, but it has just been announced that a new version of Avengers: Endgame will be hitting theaters next week.
With Avengers: Endgame just $45 million shy of surpassing James Cameron's Avatar for the top film of all time worldwide, it should come as no surprise that Disney and Marvel Studios are looking to make a final push to get the film across the finish line.
Although it's been reported that Avengers: Endgame will arrive with additional footage, hopes for an extended cut in theaters will be met with disappointment. The film, which is already over three hours long, will instead have a deleted scene, a touching tribute and a "few surprises" at the end of the movie.
Whether or not that ultimately proves to be enough of a draw to make up the $45 million difference remains to be seen, but with Captain Marvel having seen a huge bump in business leading up to Avengers: Endgame, Marvel Studios is certainly hoping for the same with Endgame leading into Spider-Man: Far From Home.
As for what the deleted scene will be, some have speculated that it may be the scene involving Katherine Langford, whose casting was widely reported at the time, but who did not ultimately appear in the theatrical cut of the film. Her role was revealed to be that of an older Morgan Stark, the daughter of Tony Stark, with her scene being a parallel to the Thanos and young Gamora vision from the mind stone in Avengers: Infinity War.
There hasn't been word on how wide this "newer" version of Avengers: Endgame will be, but it should be similar to how Avatar was re-released with a special edition in 2010. ~Paolo Maquiraya
The version of the movie I saw was, I thought, the whole package for theatre release. I usually expect extended cuts with the film on digital and DVD, or possible five years in the future on screen. I’ve got to admit after paying the money, such a short time ago, to see it at the theatre, this bait and switch makes me feel kind of cheated. And all because they want to break a record?
The thing is, they are doing this Just to break Avatars record, but if you release a films again, with added footage, you arent releasing the same film. Also, remember, Avatar did with 1 Movie, what Marvel did with 22. Endgame, on its own, without watching the 21 First movies, is crap.
If Endgame surpasses Avatar, it should have an * beside the win. Avatar did it as it was presented originally. Endgame needs to re-release it with new footage and other stuff? It's like they ran a race and suddenly last lap added the steroid. It should have been saved for the Blu Ray features. What left for that?
I agree about it just being an odd marketing and sales ploy. But since I also believe it's a great film on its own (though it's a good idea to see at least some of the others) ... yes, I'll see it again this way. That will be number four for me and I'll likely see it again for a personal all time record fifth on a big screen when it drops to second run. I still say ... Oscar, Best Picture, Et Cetera, as per LOTR:ROTK in 2003, and for the same reasons. Unless, as in '03, there's something of the calibre of "Schindler's List" coming down the pipe (there wasn't in '03). In any case, I have a few prepaid tickets and I'll use one to enjoy this wonderful film, which has legs regardless of all the hype, for viewing four with whatever extras the Marvel bunch have added.
Plain and simple, “money grabâ€. That they weren’t finished putting the film together? Pure full on BS! I really enjoy watching the movies and how they’ve cross the characters/actors into neighboring films., but this just crosses the wrong line. I for one recommend boycotting it, hit them were it hurts the most. This act cheapens the movies... there’ a thought, i would go see it if they honered the movie ticket I already bought first time around.
Hey Tharsos, they're releasing the same movie, the same cut. They're just tacking on some goodies after the credits roll as an extra treat.
For those who think that using a re-release is somehow skewing the playing field: "As of June 20, 2019, Avengers: Endgame has grossed… a worldwide total of $2.745 billion. ############ "Including the revenue from a re-release of Avatar featuring extended footage, Avatar grossed $760,507,625 in the U.S. and Canada, and $2,027,457,462 in other countries for a worldwide total of $2,787,965,087* ###### Per their respective Wiki pages (Thanks, Wiki) Avatar's worldwide total includes its own re-release. So Endgame wanting to follow suit in an attempt to beat Avatar's record actually just balances the competition out. Also, why the angst about the "cash grab"? It's not like the film industry is a non-profit. For all the creativity involved, the intent is still (shocking I know) for all parties to actually make some money.

Will Cineplex show the re-release starting this Friday? It doesn't mention re-release and only in regular screen.
@Tharsos, if you included all 22 marvel movies into this competition, the revenue generated would be closer to 10 billion. Also, Avatar ran for 7 months with absolutely no competition and a re-release which totaled up to 2.788 billion. regardless of whether endgame surpasses avatar or not, Avatar does not come close to Endgame in terms of storytelling and how the film was done. The only real reason why Avatar is where it's at right now is simply due to the fact that it ran for 7 months without any competition. That is really it. If endgame ran for 7 months with no competition, it would reach 4 billion. Do the math, endgame has not been on theaters for 3 months at 2.7 billion with competition.
Is everyone forgetting that Avatar did pretty much the same thing? Released in winter 2009, left theatres, and then re-released in summer 2010 but in 3D. Can't fault Marvel for doing this if Avatar also did it.
