Ed (John Lithgow), a man on the wrong side of 60, takes a chance and reaches out to Ronnie (Blythe Danner), a woman whom he has been smitten with after running into her at his local grocery store. As they get to know each other and see their relationship blossom, they find themselves at odds with their perspectives on life. Ed is a man obsessed with the future and preparing for some eventual apocalypse and Ronnie is a woman obsessed with the past and dealing with the loss of her daughter, but when illness strikes they are able to learn to focus on the present.
