The official restricted trailer for Life opens to the voice of a man (Jake Gyllenhaal) saying, "This is Dr. David Jordan, black box recording...in case of death." Images of astronauts in a space shuttle are shown and it becomes obvious that the crew has retrieved a specimen.

As the trailer continues, one astronaut is attacked by "the first proof of life on Mars." Another astronaut (Ryan Reynolds) informs his colleagues, "We can't let that thing in here." The unsettling clip continues by showing the astronauts struggle to contain the species, lose communication and fight to survive against the alien lifeform.

All through the trailer, a woman can repeatedly be heard asking, "What have we done?"
