Ithaca College film professor Cathy Lee Crane presents Unoccupied Zone: The Impossible Life of Simone Weil, her meditation on the controversial philosopher, trade-unionist, and Christian mystic.

Crane focuses the film on the time of Weil's life when she moved to southern France following the 1940 German occupation of Paris, but the "unoccupied zone" of the title only marginally refers to France under Vichy.

It is more importantly an existential labyrinth imaged by the film itself; a psychic space through which Weil passed while in exile in her own country. Through this space, Crane explores the ideas of one of the most important thinkers of the 20th century.

Shot in Paris, Marseille and on the Dillingham Stage at Ithaca College (with local actors), it also features an original score by Beth Custer. Feb. 3, 2009, marks the 100th anniversary of Weil's birth.
