Manhattan couple George (James Norton) and Catherine Clare (Amanda Seyfried), along with their young daughter Franny (Ana Sophia Heger), move to a historic hamlet in the Hudson Valley when George lands a teaching job at a small college.
Catherine, who had to give up her job to move, feels isolated at the farmhouse George picked out. She slowly comes to discover that George has been less than honest in many of his dealings. Not only that, but when she and Franny sense a ghostly presence in the house, George refuses to believe them.
When Catherine discovers the long history of the house and the people who lived there before, she begins to realize her marriage is not on solid ground.
