Jan Svankmajer, master animator and dyed-in-the-wool surrealist, has influenced Tim Burton, the Quay Brothers and anyone who has ever harbored the fear that objects may be conspiring against them.

Lunacy builds on his previous features (Alice, Faust, Little Otik), melding the creepiness of Edgar Allan Poe's stories ("Premature Burial," "The System of Dr. Tarr and Prof. Fether") with the sex and violence decadence of the Marquis de Sade.

In 19th-century France (albeit one full of deliberate anachronisms), a young man plagued by nightmares is invited by a marquis to spend the night in his castle.

There, our hero witnesses a blasphemous orgy and a "therapeutic" funeral before being transported to a surreal lunatic asylum where the patients have complete freedom and the staff is locked up behind bars. Not for the faint of heart.
