Puppeteers Judy (Mia Wasikowska) and Punch (Damon Herrima) are trying to resurrect their marionette show. Punch seems to think he is the most talented puppeteer of his generation, however, that title actually goes to his wife. Instead, Punch has a bigger talent for drinking.

One evening, Punch is left to care for the couple’s child and the night ends in a tragic and fatal accident. When Judy comes home and is horrified that her husband is responsible for the death of their child, Punch retaliates by beating her almost to death. He buries her body in the forest and goes off to town, saying his wife and child are missing.

But Judy is still alive and teams up with a band of outcast heretics to enact revenge not only on Punch, but on the entire town.
