Martin Joubert and his wife have moved from Paris to his Normandy hometown to take over the operation of his father's bakery. A lover of literature, Martin is delighted to discover that his new English neighbors are named Charlie and Gemma Bovery, reminding him of the names of characters in the novel Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert. Martin falls for the beautiful younger woman and tries to find ways to spend time with her.

However, just as he thinks his feelings might be reciprocated, Gemma is stung by a bee during a hike in the forest and is rescued by Hervé Bressigny, a squire who studied law at university. Gemma and Hervé, whom Martin compares to Rudolph, Madame Bovary’s young lover, begin an affair. The baker spies Gemma having extramarital relations with Hervé and becomes jealous. He sends Gemma photocopied extracts from the book as a warning that she may suffer the same fate as the heroine of his favorite novel.
