Double Sentence
The living conditions of children whose mothers are incarcerated vary from place to place in the world. In Nepal, infants stay with their mothers in prison, before being cared for by family members or sent to shelters when they reach six years of age.
In the San Sebastian prison in Bolivia, 45 children live with their parents — they will stay there until they reach adulthood. In a Montreal detention center, a woman who is serving a one-year sentence for fraud gets Christmas visits with her two young daughters, who live with their father and his new family.
In the United States, where parents and children are separated throughout the sentence, an African-American teenager finally gets the right to visit her mother, whom she has not seen for seven years.
