38 Janksy Units / Directed by John Krocker, 1982, Canada, 3 min / A work of comedy, a work of art. The content is debatable, but the colour is good and the soundtrack is interesting. Just like an experimental film.
5 Cents a Copy / Directed by Ed Ackerman & Gregory Zbitnew, 1980, Canada, 5 min / An innovative experimental animated film that makes moving images with a photocopy machine. Through bizarre images and a pulsing electronic musical score, the filmmakers have created a mind expanding work that will long remain in your memory.
Cattle Call / Directed by Mike Maryniuk & Matthew Rankin, 2008, Canada, 3:30 min / A high-speed animated documentary about the art of livestock auctioneering. Structured around the mesmerizing talents of 2007 Man-Sask Auctioneer Champion, Tim Dowler, and using a variety of classic and avant-garde animation techniques (including stop-motion, cut-outs, open-exposures, hole-punching and rubbing lettraset directly on the celluloid) filmmakers Maryniuk and Rankin have tried to create images as dazzlingly abstract, absurd and adrenalizing as the incredible language of auctioneering itself. It is our hope that the film will induce near-bovine levels of dumbfoundedness in all those who gaze upon it.
Asleep at the Wheel / Directed by Mike Maryniuk, 2005, Canada, 2 min / Using found footage of road trips from the 60’s, Maryniuk has crafted a psychedelic tribute piece to a friend who passed away in a car accident. Maryniuk’s techniques included hole punching and reassembling, bleaching, painting, scratch animation and boiling the film.
Sun Moon Stars Rain / Directed by Leslie Supnet, 2009, Canada, 3:20 min / An animated visual elegy, mourning the death of Mother Nature’s children.
Le Dernier Soir / Directed by Kayla Jeanson, 2011, Canada, 5:48 min / A woman in a mask leads a group of children through an evening of fun and fantasy, crafting masks and projecting animated unicorns onto houses.
The Stranger Song / Directed by Milos Mitrovic, 2014, Canada, 3:14 min / In the fashion of early cinema of the 20th century, this film draws influence from the Lumiere brothers and other filmmakers of the “Cinema of Attraction” era. The film portrays a delightfully simple, humorous and complex activity of a man getting shaved by his father.
Polar Express / Directed by Karen Asmundson & Gwen Trutnau, 2014, Canada, 4:52 min / The Carnival is back in town and Jim is hellbent for leather to ride the Polar Express and worship his ultimate fantasy: the airbrushed mural of the fur-clad polar goddess. A gender-bending heavy metal mid-way ride of ridiculous fun.
Cinematheque at Home – curated by the Cinematheque – will offer new theatrical releases to our audience every week through Vimeo on Demand. Cinematheque at Home will offer new programs (individual feature films and/or shorts programs) each week, which our audiences can pay to stream through our website. This is not only an opportunity for our patrons to see new cinema, but is an important way that they can continue to support independent film during this pandemic.
