While on vacation with his wife at her family's home in Nimes, Parisian police chief Paul Bellamy, whose excellent reputation is known throughout the country, is contacted by Emile Leullet, a man in his 50s who is wanted by the authorities. And for good reason: his car was discovered at the foot of a cliff with a homeless person dead inside.

Leullet initially planned to kill the man and put him in the car, hoping the body would be mistaken for Leullet so his wife could get the insurance money. But it becomes clear that the man is not Leullet, and in addition, Leullet says he never went through with the plan. That leaves a big question—how did the man wind up dead in the car? Intrigued by the case, Bellamy opens his own investigation, in addition to the one carried out by the local authorities. But circumstances distract him from the case, including the arrival of his young half-brother Jacques, an alcoholic ex-convict.
