Aida (Verdi)
Daniela Dessì leads an all-star cast featuring Elisabetta Fiorillo, Fabio Armiliato, Juan Pons and Roberto Scandiuzzi in this renowned and unique period production of Verdi's popular masterpiece. Extraordinary sets created by Josep Mestres Cabanes, the last representative of the old Catalan school of scenography, delight the senses creating a magical one-of-a-kind experience on the stages of Barcelona's famous opera house. Mestres Cabanes worked on his Aida vision for eight years, painting his amazing historic paper trompe-l'oeil sets between 1936-45. The seven magnificent sets he painted for Aida in 1945 have been subtly and painstakingly restored by Jordi Castells and his team—revealing exotic pharaoh's palaces, temples and surroundings of Memphis and Thebes evoking a historical yet also fantasy-like vision as backdrop to Verdi's thrilling drama of love and emotion. Inspired by the restoration of Cabanes's exquisite works from a storied era, the Symphony Orchestra and Chorus of the Gran Teatre del Liceu directed by Miguel Ángel Gómez Martínez excels as does the cast under Stage Director Jose Antonio Gutierrez.
