In the powerful trailer for the drama American Pastoral, a post office owner steps out to raise the American flag as dawn approaches. It's like any other day in rural America, until he steps back into his little shop and it unceremoniously explodes. Set against a haunting cover of Tears for Fears' "Mad World," we step back in time to follow Seymour "Swede" Levov (Ewan McGregor), his wife Dawn (Jennifer Connelly), their daughter Merry, and the evolution of their typical American family. Time passes, and Merry (Dakota Fanning), now a teenager, has become increasingly rebellious and disillusioned with the "establishment." After she's accused of that fateful act of terrorism against the post office, she disappears without a trace. Now Seymour and Dawn must deal with the consequences of their daughter's choices and the rapid disintegration of their once-perfect life.
