Targets is shallow exploitation masquerading as a serious exploration of violence, but it doesn't really have anything to say. Karloff's character is a pretentious actor who thinks nothing of skirting his professional responsibilities no matter who it hurts. Director Bogdanovich also acts in the film playing...a movie director. You'd think he'd be able to play the role seeing as how he's a movie director himself but Bogdanovich's portrayal is absolutely terrible. The home of the killer is completely spare. It doesn't look lived in at all. Polly Platt was the production designer but it seems she forgot to design a set for the killer's home. The climax of the film may have seemed clever on paper but when you watch the ending it comes off as ridiculously illogical. On the plus side, you do get to see Mike Farrell get shot. Inspired by the horrible shooting spree of Charles Whitman. You'd be better off tracking down the made-for-tv movie about the tragedy starring Kurt Russell as Whitman. It carries much more dramatic weight and isn't nearly as pretentious as this film.
