Paul gross did a great job at this movie, with 20 million, We need to show the world what canadains did in the wars more offen, and how it affected the home frount too.

appositely horrible

User review rating: 0 February 04, 2009

While it may not be a 100% accurate depiction, the fact that it was made to begin with is a big plus in my mind. This was an important point in the early history of Canada, if you look at the number of troops that a young country sent (voluntary or not) to WWI it's staggering. I digress from the movie, but read Pierre Berton's book "Marching As to War: Canada's Turbulent Years" to get a better picture. As for the film, it's a touching tribute to the people that sacrificed everything for their country, while some people complain it's too romantic or trite they're missing the point: it's supposed to be a vignette of what went on during that period. It's ambitious and cannot satisfy everyon

Unnecessary profanity and a redundant romance take away from what could have been a good movie. It is the military aspect that is important - - the rest just takes away from the program.

Bloody briliant. We need to look at our own History more often. Most Canadians unfortunatly succumb to the propoganda machine of our Southern niebours. Remember the only Army the the Germans feared in both wars, was the Canadians. Read, learn and watch about Canadian History, IT IS INTERESTING. Well Done Mr Gross.

Terrible Movie!

Great effort. Here's hoping Paul Gross learned some things with this one, and will move to a better film going forward.

what a bad movie!! My Great Grandfather Fought In Passchendaele and he would say this is incorrect!

User review rating: 0 January 04, 2009

Horrible writing. The dialogue was cliched and unoriginal. I was very disappointed ~ I had high hopes for this Canadian production.

With Passchendale Paul Gross managed do with $20 million what it took Spielberg $80 million to do in Saving Private Ryan. This is by far one of the best Canadian film I have ever seen.

7 out of 5....enough said.

FABULOUS MOVIE! One of the best war movies of all time. Paul Gross was excellent in this movie and it is one that we would see again. Totally worth the money for a ticket to watch. Will definitely purchase when it is out on DVD. It was also good to see Canadian content: made in Canada, about Canadians and gives a good sense of Canadian history.

Hi: My Father won the Military Medal at Passchendaele, with a Toronto Regiment, the 4th CMR's. He was a Sergeant. Although the movie was good, it was not as my Father depicted it to me. Again, I enjoyed the movie. Stan

Gross showed great promise with his first feature (Men With Brooms) but I'm afraid he's out of his element here.

User review rating: 0 December 15, 2008

Boring, long and incomprehensible. There were some good battle scenes and a great look at the muck interspersed with a tedious and melodramtic love story and some insane, goofy plotting. What was the point of the villainous british recruiter, who followed Paul to France ,after he'd recruited him.... because??? Some fuzzy motivation for his silly vendetta. Worth seeing. Some beautiful Alberta scenery. Paul needed someone else to rein him in. It's a shame.

This is a film every Canadian should see. Paul Gross should be commended for his amazing effort in bringing this tragic story to the attention of the film world. I'm a Pacifist and this film confirms my belief that War succeeds in nothing but pain, horror, destruction and death but it seems we will never learn this lesson as Aphganistan proves.

Fantastic...Fantastic...Fantastic!!! Loved seeing a war epic with "Canada" on the shoulder patches of the soldiers. Canada has given so much in effort sacrifice in both world wars and Korea, but is nearly completely overlooked in cinema. "The Longest Day" barely mentions Juno beach, and "A Bridge Too Far" snubs the contribution of Canada to the success of Operation Market Garden in the Battle of the Scheldt . It's about time an epic was made heralding a Canadian contribution.

Why isn't there an option for giving it zero stars? This was, perhaps, the worst movie I've ever seen. Paul Gross is an able actor and certainly has passion for the subject, but this film was a hokey, amateurish effort from beginning to end. The dialogue will have you rolling your eyes and there was absolutely no pathos in the whole thing. This kind of film is the reason why Canadian film gets such a bad rap. It deserves it. Bad casting, sloppy story, painfully ridiculous dialogue, scenes directly reminiscent of Saving Private Ryan, religious symbolism that was way, way over the top - I was actually embarrassed for Paul Gross. He showed this to people? While he was actually in the audien

It is stunning to see critics in these reviews. This film is an epic! Do NOT let the nabobs of cultural negativism fool you. Like all war film this one has plenty of action and a love story. But unlike others, ESPECIALLY the American variety (Band of Brothers and Private Ryan among the worst) Passchendaele tells a real-life Canadian heroic, and tragic, story that we ALL need to remember. Don't be fooled by the Canadian self-loathers. Go see this film for what it is: A Canadian masterpiece.

AWESOME.....Canada's pte.Ryan

Although it is a great story, i dont believe this movie to be quite the tribute to the soldiers as it was revved up to be. Despite this fact, it displayed quite an accurate portrayal of what life was like back on the home front; the racism shown throughout Canada and the pressure tactics used to 'encourage' people to join the military were accurate and true. If your looking for a love story, great movie, if your looking for a historic show about what happened at home of the war, good movie, if your looking for an action film; i really wouldnt bother, though the 15 minutes of action were great, but not worth it

How do we know what went on in this battle unless we are given movies such as this? People should be proud of Paul Gross for wanting to make this movie as a tribute to his Grandfather and the many soldiers that fought by his side. Yes, there is a love story intertwined throughout, which makes it a more appealing movie for women to go and see.The night my friend, her son and I were there, no one left their seats until the credits were done. To me that shows how interested they were in this local film.I couldn't stop crying and thought of the stories of my grandfather fighting in WW1 and the effects I was told it had on him. I also read his book in two days prior to going to the movie(I couldn

Excellant movie. Bravo to Paul Gross and the wonderful cast.

User review rating: 0 November 22, 2008

Not a good account of what happened, great story of course and not enough filming of the environment that was suffered.

User review rating: 0 November 22, 2008

Did not capture the real history of Passchendaele in the way Band of Brothers director SS may have done.

User review rating: 0 November 22, 2008

For such a significant moment in Canadian history I thought this film fell short on reflecting fully

User review rating: 0 November 22, 2008

Canadians should be very proud of what the troops did for the world in this battle, but it does not make this a good film

User review rating: 0 November 22, 2008

awful and cheesy. Only good part was the war scenes. There is a good movie in here SOMEWHERE...but its no where near good in its full presentation

User review rating: 0 November 22, 2008

My friend, whether one "GETS" the movie or not, the lines, the acting, the scripting and the direction are not even comparable to a bigger budget (American type) production. Besides, every Canadian "GETS" the movie, okay! Don't let sentimentality get in the way of justified criticism. Paul Gross is making a buck or two despite it all, so relax okay. signed...........GWH

Good but not excellent movie, excellent war scenes and action!

User review rating: 0 November 21, 2008

it was good!!!!!!! i don't know what the others are talking about!!!!!!! they obviously didn't get the movie.

User review rating: 0 November 21, 2008

Good try, but acting is overdone or poor.

User review rating: 0 November 21, 2008

Sorry. I'm a proud Canadian and very thankful for the freedom our military has given their lives for over so many years. However, this movie is "made for tv" at best. I realize budget restrictions in Canadian movie making are partially to blame. But the scripting and dialogue were hokey to the extreme. Acting was poor and way over done. One really bad scene was when the 2 main female characters met for the 1st time in the ransacked house. Of course the final portion of the battle scene was way, way over the the top. Like I said, sorry. signed...GWH (a typically ordinairy and thankfully proud, but realistic Canadian.)

Excellent - Love to support Canadian. Paul Gross director, actor - what can one say 5 out of 5...

User review rating: 0 November 19, 2008

One of the worst war movies ever made; an embarassment to the men who fought at Passchendaele.

User review rating: 0 November 19, 2008

Paul Gross makes it easy to be proud to be Canadian!! Movie was spectacular. I felt like a peeping tom while watching this movie because the feel was so real. Bravo!!

User review rating: 0 November 18, 2008

The battle scenes broke my heart, they were too real. My grandfather signed up to serve after coming to Canada from England. He met my grandmother while stationed in Belgium during WW1, and moved with her to Calgary after the war. It hit very close to home for me.

User review rating: 0 November 18, 2008

My father was one of those nineteen year olds, who fought at Passchendaele, and who was wounded and gasses with mustard gas. I found the movie riveting, and realistic. My father told me some stories.....but mainly talked about being cold and wet, and hungry. It was a beautiful love story. Thank you Paul Gros

User review rating: 0 November 18, 2008

Very, very disappointed. Too much of the love story that ruined it and throw in some chopping scenes. It was more like a 1970/80s CBC TV mini series than a big-budget movie - even for Canadian standards. It wasn't a terrible movie but could have and should have been much, much better. The opening battle scene was wonderfully done and I expected more of that - instead Gross focused on the hokey/cheesey home front love story. He expects the audience to assume a lot - example when Dunne leave and his love read his note - how did she (Sarah) know the note was at his mother's home? We have to assume that his one-arm friend told her because he was there in the scene - standing not knowing w

good solid movie well done

User review rating: 0 November 16, 2008

An amazing movie. Not a history lesson, true, but it does illuminate the pain and suffering that lead to the great victory, and the eventual pain and suffering of losing the same battle. The sacrifice and heroism, the angst and fear, the desire and the worry....this movie gave us that. I laughed, I cried, it is a part of us all.

User review rating: 0 November 16, 2008

Best and realistic movie in a long time

User review rating: 0 November 16, 2008

Excellent job Paul. I can only say how proud I am of all our soldiers, past and present. My wife and I and our four kids (ages 14 to 20) all went to Passchendaele and was extremely satisfied. This movie is worth seeing a second time. We will be buying Passchendaele when it comes out on video. Americans and their pathetic movie critics have said "Passchendaele would not do good outside of Canada". This is not for the U.S. this is about Canada. Could care less to see another American War Movie. Proud to see a wonderfully made Canadian War Movie. It's about time. Excellent Movie.

User review rating: 0 November 16, 2008

Not very well done. Although the battle sequences were very realistic, the plot and acting were very disappointing. The love story really ruined it. Very cliche and not worth all the hype whatsover. I found the love story to be very corny and the acting and writing were very mediocre.

User review rating: 0 November 15, 2008

By far the worst movie I have ever seen. As a acting graduate, and a music student this film made me feel ashamed to a part of the arts in Canada. Inacturately portrayed as a war film, this poorly written, mis-directed, below par acted movie was an excuse for a love story.
