  I was VERY apprehensive about seeing this in theatres. I didn't like the theatrical version of the first one. To put it bluntly, there were too many holes. The extended-version was MUCH better because the holes weren't there, and therefore the movie made more sense. I was thoroughly impressed with this one however. I don't know how Disney does it when everybody else in Hollywood seems to fail miserably, but they are MASTERS when it comes setting the right mood with fantasy movies. Not only that, the CGI is top-notch. The darker parts of the story were dark, regardless of how many fantastical creatures are in the picture.
