2008 marks the twentieth anniversary of the Waterwalker Paddling Film Festival. This national event, produced by Paddle Canada, commemorates the life of Winnipeg's Bill Mason and his vision for our nation's wild places. The festival's purpose is to raise "Canada's support and public awareness for waterway and wilderness preservation through the celebration of films on canoeing, kayaking, water safety, the environment and the conservation and protection of our natural resources."

The afternoon will feature the best of the world's paddling films, suitable for all ages, as well as a silent auction, door prizes, and a concession.

Here is a description of three of the festival winners.

Light in Liquid features expeditions and adventures on rivers and creeks in Colorado, Idaho and Mexico. This film pushes the creative edge in the whitewater film genre and focuses on the process of travel, the paddlers themselves, and the world around them just as much as it does on running waterfalls and creeks

Oil + Water - Kayakers Seth Warren and Tyler Bradt travel the rivers of the Americas and tackle the longest 100% petroleum-free road trip in the world. The Oil + Water Project combines their passion for life on the water along with their strong desire to motivate and educate youth to make sustainable lifestyle choices.

Canoeing Old Growth - After years of canoeing the rugged wind swept eastern shore of Ontario's Georgian Bay, four canoeing partners decide to visit Temagami and some of Ontario' s last remaining old growth forests.

Through our instructional programs, clinics, and indoor presentations Paddle Manitoba engaged more than 800 Manitobans in 2007. Funds raised by the Waterwalker Festival also support projects such as Paddle Camp, where we train future leaders and guides as well as our Paddle Outreach program for youth.

Sponsors Include: Wilderness Supply Company, Northern Soul Adventures, Wilderness Spirit, Red River Outfitters, Manitoba Pioneer Camp, Wave Track Canoe, Mountain Equipment Co-op, and WAVpaddling.
