A simple Algerian mountain family robbed of their only son struggles to accept their devastating loss and overcome their grief in director Amor Hakkar's poetic family drama.

The Berber family lives in a modest house in the Aures mountains. A peaceful clan consisting of a mother, father, three daughters, and a son, the Berbers find their lives turned suddenly upside down when a police car arrives to inform oldest daughter Aya that her brother was recently killed in an accident.

Aya's father was absent at the time the police arrived, and she is asked to deliver the message to him as soon as he returns. Upon learning that his son is gone, Aya's father sets out in his tractor to recover his boy's body and bury him on the family property. But the funeral is only the beginning of this family's grief.

Her only son now just a fast fading memory, the mother sinks into a deep depression that even her dedicated husband cannot ease. After seeking out some non-medicinal advice from the local pharmacist to no avail, the husband suddenly has an idea that may prove the key to easing his wife's anguish.
