Lincoln Rhyme (Denzel Washington) is a NY detective specializing in forensics and the leading crimimologist in the country. The author of best-selling books, his keen eye for detail and nose for clues, have made him legendary. Following a near fatal injury in the line of duty, he is now only able to move his head, shoulders and one finger.
Feisty street-smart policewoman Amelia Donaghy(Angelina Jolie), is on her last night of duty before a transfer to a desk job when she is led to a crime scene and discovers a grossly mutilated corpse. Working with Lincoln on the case, she must be his eyes, ears and legs in order to solve the crime to crack the case before the killer strikes again.
