New York fashion designer Melanie Carmichael (Witherspoon) suddenly finds herself engaged to the city's most eligible bachelor (Dempsey). But Melanie's past holds many secrets, including Jake (Lucas), the redneck husband she married in high school, who refuses to divorce her.
