Leila Murray (Parker) is selling her body to the dull-eyed men that pass through the motel where she works as a receptionist. Secretly, she is saving to buy something that she sees shimmering just beyond the horizon -- something she desperately needs but dreads being given.
One October night she meets Gary Jensen (Rennie), a dangerous drifter who Leila finds both brutal and seductive.
