Michael Matheson Miller spent four years traveling to 20 countries to meet with those who give and those who receive humanitarian foreign aid. What he found is that the system, initiated after World War II, is broken.

He conducted more than 150 interviews, some with non-governmental organizations that profit from the aid industry and some with recipients who feel trapped by their "humanitarian way of life."
