When the king of a small European nation is suddenly killed in an accident, an heir must be named. His widow (Catherine Deneuve) disqualifies their eldest son, Prince Alban, the rightful heir, because he’s unmarried. Her favorite son, the younger Prince Arnaud, is crowned king. His wife Armelle (Valérie Lemercier), who has a big heart but is on the dowdy side, and their two young daughters find their lives altered drastically.
Armelle, a speech therapist, has to give up her job and learn her duties as a royal. She’s determined to make her husband proud, but never seems to miss an opportunity to mess things up. When she comes to the realization that Arnaud is cheating on her, she becomes determined to humiliate him and his venomous mother. She goes through a metamorphosis from ugly duckling to beautiful princess, learning to manipulate the media and win over the hearts of the public.
