PJ is a long-haul truck driver who takes pride in doing his job well. He has a wife and two step-kids who are nearing adulthood and starting to spread their wings to fly the coop. His is a life of small pleasures - singing at the local workingmen's club and fishing with his mates.

When he fails the eye-sight part of his yearly health check, his life is thrown into turmoil. Unable to do his job, he loses his sense of identity and is so ashamed, it takes him several weeks to even admit the problem to those he loves. Facing life as a blind man, his wife's new-found success as a dressmaker shames him rather than filling him with pride.

As his depression and desperation deepens, he spirals downward toward self-destruction.
