Middle-aged couple Miguel and Lina arrive in Manila, fleeing their impoverished existence. They end up taking refuge in a lean-to in a garbage dump. A relative secures Miguel a job at an ice-processing plant, but unable to take the extreme temperatures, he becomes sick and the couple is forced to become scavengers.
Lina perseveres but Miguel is mortified by their compromised quality of life. When Lina suddenly become pregnant, Miguel decides to pull himself together. But instead of a human baby, Lina gives birth to a milkfish. Quickly, Lina and her offspring becomes celebrities much to Miguel's humiliation.
