A classic Korean tale of two young 18th century lovers torn apart by class distinction, told through the words of a pansori singer (a Korean
storyteller), who sings the story from a stage in front of an audience.
Chunhyang (Lee), the daughter of a former courtesan, secretly marries her lover, Mongryong (Cho), the son of the governor of Namwon.
But when his father is transferred to Seoul, Mongryong is forced to continue his studies there, and the two are separated. During the next
three years, Chunhyang fends off the advances of the new governor, and is sentenced to death as a result. Mongryong, having finished his
education, returns to Namwon disguised as a beggar, just before Chunhyang is to be executed.
