While passing by the entrance of a large traveling fair, Ella is greeted by the ringmaster who, captivated by her beauty, offers her a free ticket. She follows a crowd inside a tent, where there are bumper cars. Ella is involved in a bumper car accident and is nearly electrocuted, but is saved by Jake, a handsome, muscular young man. They fall madly in love and are soon married.

However, there are many women who would like to be with Jake, and during a shopping spree in the city, Ella is served by a nasty saleswoman who has a crush on Jake and intends to steal him away. Her plan succeeds when she’s able to convince him that Ella has been unfaithful. Mad with grief at the thought that Ella has deceived him, he decides to fight back by being a cheater himself. Unable to understand the undisguised infidelity of her husband, Ella gives way to despair.
