Filmmakers Esmerelda Calabria, Andrea D'Ambrosio, and Peppe Ruggiero hit the road on a mission to investigate the 1,200 illegal dumps brimming with poisonous waste and blighting the otherwise scenic landscape of Italy's southern Campania region.

Each month more than three hectares of land disappear beneath burning fields of tires, oversized chunks of asbestos, and other hazardous materials - but how can this be happening in the year 2007? Perhaps the answers lie in the financial records of the Camorra (the local mafia), the local officials, and corrupt authorities - each of whom appear to have sold out their country in the name of turning a profit.

And the results of this pollution are far more frightening than many would initially suspect: Sheep breeders are forced to watch helplessly as their herds succumb to dioxide poisoning, locals consume crops tainted by deadly toxins, and even the delicious buffalo mozzarella that the region is known for could very well be contaminated.

Thankfully, people like independent environmental inspector Rafaele value the land over the dollar, and continue to work passionately towards a future where neither man nor beast must die in silence.
